I've Hit a Plateau in My Work with ChatGPT

This week's tip: A personal perspective on breaking through barriers in learning GenAI

What happens is, that you often learn basically kind of the basics of ChatGPT.

And you start using it at work and in private quite regularly.

But then you hit this plateau. You're looking around and you're kind of thinking, well, I'm not really finding the insane value in this tool.

I definitely don't feel like I'm working AI first.

Like I must be doing it wrong.

And that's totally OK.

Here is how to navigate the learning path from a novice to a AI expert:

5 Layers of AI Adoption

1. Beginner (Discovery and Frustration)

You are testing AI capabilities: Starting with AI involves initial experimentation where you test the tool's capabilities. At this stage, focus on understanding basic functionalities, setting up simple tasks, and evaluating AI responses. It’s about getting comfortable with what AI can do in a controlled setting.

2. Professional (Skill Enhancement)

You are applying AI to tasks: Once familiar with the basics, the next step is to apply AI to real professional tasks. Here, AI helps automate routine jobs like scheduling, email management, or data entry. The goal is to enhance efficiency and free up time for more complex work, seeing firsthand how AI supports day-to-day responsibilities.

3. Productivity (Breaking the Plateau)

You are integrating AI into workflows: Integration is more than just task automation; it's about applying AI seamlessly to your existing workflows. At this stage, focus on how AI can interact with other tools, support decision-making processes, and streamline operations. This is where AI begins to change how work is done.

4. Focused (Work Transformation)

You are changing your processes: As AI becomes a critical part of workflows, it transforms decision-making. Utilize AI to analyze data, forecast trends, and provide actionable insights. This strategic use of AI supports more informed and effective decisions, shifting the role of AI from a tool to a trusted advisor.

5. AI-First (Strategical Thinking)

You are driving innovation: The final stage is where true innovation begins. Here, AI isn't just an addition to your toolkit - it's a driver of new processes and strategies with AI at the core. This stage involves using AI to rethink work from the ground up, create new value, redefine strategies, and stay ahead of industry trends.

Reflecting on My AI Journey

My personal journey with AI mirrors these stages. Initially, I tested AI for simple tasks, which quickly proved its value and led to its integration into my workflows. As confidence grew, so did my reliance on AI, transforming my decision-making processes. Now, I'm exploring innovative ways AI can further differentiate my work and business.

Understanding these stages helps demystify the process of adopting AI and illustrates a clear path from beginner testing to leading innovation.
